Le Lac - Jan Theuninck, 2017
Jan Theuninck painted it after a visit to the villa in July 2017.
He met Albert Jeanneret, the brother of Le Corbusier, who lived in the villa until 1973, in the village of Finhaut around 1970. Albert Jeanneret was a musician, composer and violinist. He helped developing the Dalcroze Method in Hellerau, Germany. The Dalcroze Method or simply eurhythmics, is one of several developmental approaches including the Kodály Method, Orff Schulwerk and Suzuki Method used to teach music to students. When Theuninck met him, he was experimenting with sound recordings of daily life noises which he called "bruits humanisés".

Conformity - Jan Theuninck, 2017
anticonformismo e libero pensiero ormai considerati malattie mentali
The system is designed to produce conformity, not genius(Marilyn Mach)
Krachtige woorden van een lid van het Europees Parlement, Christine Andersen, over de stand van zaken in onze wereld: “Je kunt je niet conformeren aan een tirannie.”

The Lucifer effect refers to the phenomenon whereby people under certain circumstances, particularly group circumstances, can lose their sense of morality and begin to behave negatively, sometimes even brutally. It is a deliberate exercise of power to harm others: psychologically through verbal abuse, bullying, teasing, gossiping, spreading rumors, dehumanizing, hurting others, torturing, physically abusing, and destroying or killing.
Conformity: The Pipeline from Education to Obedience
The mechanisms of this control have been perfected over the centuries, but have reached new heights through the systematic transformation of education and the scientific study of psychological manipulation. As John Taylor Gatto revealed, schools teach seven lessons: confusion, class status, indifference, emotional dependency, intellectual dependency, makeshift self-respect, and constant surveillance—all designed to create docile citizens rather than independent thinkers. Charlotte Iserbyt documented how this “deliberate dumbing down” shifted education from academic excellence to job training, using Skinnerian behavioral psychology to create measurable results rather than true understanding. Meanwhile, as William Sargant demonstrated in “Battle for the Mind,” the techniques of psychological conversion have been refined to a science: mental exhaustion weakens cognitive defenses, repetitive questioning creates uncertainty in memory, isolation removes the reality check, and emotional manipulation depletes the psychological resources needed for critical thinking. The system fragments knowledge into isolated facts, destroys the coherence that creates meaning, and ensures that "good people wait for an expert to tell them what to do." This educational and psychological conditioning explains why the population has so readily accepted the authoritarian measures of recent years: they were trained from childhood to follow irrational orders, to depend on certified authorities, and never to question the shadows on the wall. As a CIA expert declared before Congress in 1962, with enough time and the right techniques, "we can make anyone kill their own parents and eat them in a soup." The digital age has only accelerated this process: algorithms now preemptively determine what information reaches us, AI creates personalized perception caves, and educational technology widely applies behavioristic methods, making certain ideas literally unthinkable by ensuring they never enter our consciousness.

Headshrinker / zielenknijper - Jan Theuninck, 2017
anticonformismo e libero pensiero ormai considerati malattie mentali
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zielenknijper :
"Headshrinker" (Zielenknijper), 2017:Context and Description:
Created in 2017, Headshrinker (Dutch: Zielenknijper) is an acrylic-on-canvas painting featured prominently in Theuninck's portfolio. The work measures 70x100 cm and depicts a fragmented, humanoid figure—evoking a psychiatrist or "shrink"—with exaggerated, distorted features. Theuninck has repeatedly shared the image in response to news about mental health crises, screen addiction, political "psychiatrization" of dissent, and global events like COVID-19 lockdowns, positioning it as a timeless emblem of psychological manipulation.Thematic AnalysisHeadshrinker operates on multiple levels, critiquing the commodification of the mind in contemporary society:
- Power and Control in Therapy: The central figure embodies the psychiatrist as both healer and oppressor—a "soul-squeezer" who shrinks egos to fit societal norms. The distorted head symbolizes the reduction of complex human experiences to diagnosable pathologies, echoing Theuninck's broader skepticism toward institutions. In a 2021 X post, he linked it to French philosopher Luc Ferry's dismissal of anti-vaccine skeptics as "paranoid," arguing that labeling nonconformity as mental illness is a tool for silencing opposition. This aligns with historical uses of psychiatry for political control, from Soviet-era dissident diagnoses to modern debates on "mass formation psychosis" during pandemics.
- Existential Isolation and Vanity: True to Theuninck's poetic themes (e.g., his 2001 work Beyond the Limit, which probes ethical gray zones driven by vanity and power), the painting explores how self-examination becomes self-erasure. It suggests a loss of agency, where the "patient" (or viewer) is dwarfed by the therapist's gaze. The subtle red accents—perhaps blood or suppressed emotion—evoke a quiet violence, reminiscent of monochrome expressionists like Rothko but infused with Belgian surrealism (e.g., influences from Magritte's everyday absurdities).
- Societal Commentary on Mental Health Crises: Theuninck's X usage amplifies this, pairing the image with headlines on rising suicide rates, ADHD diagnoses, and brain alterations from screen time (e.g., 2019 posts citing CNN studies on preschoolers). It critiques a system that pathologizes normal responses to chaos—pandemics, isolation, political gaslighting—while ignoring root causes like media distortion or economic pressures. In one post, he quips, "Peut-on avoir trop d'argent?" ("Can one have too much money?") alongside Bill Gates' philanthropy, implying billionaire "solutions" shrink human problems to fit profit models.
