Stark monochrome contrasts, evoking Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will. Shared on X in June 2025 amid Russia-Ukraine talks, it warns of resurgent authoritarian "wills" in Europe. Expressionist edges imply surveillance and suppressed dissent.
Thematic Depth: Warnung is a prescient alarm against hubris in international realpolitik, warning of "willing coalitions" devolving into authoritarian echoes. The 2019 painting ties to Theuninck's Berlin residency (he mentions a poisoned studio in related posts), where he grappled with Europe's resurgent nationalisms. In 2025's lens—post-Ukraine escalations and EU-Russia standoffs—it reads as a indictment of Western diplomacy's performative bluster. The "triumph" isn't victory but tragic farce: Europe's "coalition of the willing" mirrors the film's orchestrated rallies, now reduced to diplomatic slapstick. Theuninck's "lost truth" here is the cycle of history's repetition, where warnings (like his own censored queries) go unheeded.

(sept.2024)
