Democracy - Jan Theuninck, 2016

Jan Theuninck's Democracy
Jan Theuninck's work often explores the relationship between democracy and the political system. His essay "De dichter en de politiek!" delves into the concept of a democracy where all voices align in the same direction, raising questions about the nature of political power and the role of individual citizens. The essay reflects on the implications of a society where corporate interests dominate and citizens' rights are diminished, suggesting a potential political implosion due to the collapse of the wall. The essay also examines the dangers of a society where decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, questioning the existence of general rules and the influence of elite groups on legislation. The essay is a reflection on the political and societal evolution, comparing the Third Way movement of political figures like Clinton, Blair, and Schröder to a new form of National Socialism. The artist's work, characterized by its monochrome style and sharp language, often intertwines political and social thought, making it a subject of reflection and discussion. Jan Theuninck's engagement with democracy is marked by a critique of the political system's hypocrisy and the erosion of civil and individual rights. His poetry and art serve as a call to action, urging individuals to think critically about their place in a politically charged society.

"The core problem with us is that many citizens no longer even know what democracy actually means. Democracy is nothing other than the institutionalized distrust of citizens toward those in power: a control mechanism, a procedure. This procedure serves primarily to control those in power. Unfortunately, this is widely misunderstood in our country. Over millennia, peoples have learned the hard way that those who rule are not philanthropists, but ruthlessly abuse their power against the ruled. Liberal democracy is at its core precisely this control mechanism to prevent that. With us, it is eroding in the sense that gradually those in power presume to control the ruled, and not the other way around. This inversion becomes particularly evident when state institutions like the domestic intelligence service no longer primarily protect the constitution, but are misused to collect data on critical citizens and even former officeholders or to categorize them as ‘right-wing extremists,’ simply because they point out abuses or criticize the government. I myself have had to take legal action against this, because such practices fundamentally undermine liberal democracy. The citizen must remain the sovereign—not become the object of state surveillance.“ (

 De dichter en de politiek!?!

© ORC(°1954)

The Poet and Politics!?! - an essay on democracy

An essay on democracy, written by Jan Theuninck in the early 21st century, at the request of Sara Russell, the publisher of Poetry Life and Times, for her Dutch-language pages.

The Poet and Politics!?!

© ORC(°1954)

May or can a poet venture to describe the political fool's game? How far can he go in his critical approach to a society in which political power sees itself as a kind of religion for the people? Or is it perhaps his civic duty to sharpen his pen against the aberrations of power? Joseph Beuys already said "whoever does not want to think flies out [of themselves]" - apparently, political provocation is an item that passes many poets by. In this cocoon world, the poet offers a deeper insight into the world around us and also questions the political world, attempts to provoke discussion through provocation, and above all encourages reflection on who and what we are and how we function in this politicized society, with a number of confusion-sowing deep screens of "Truth and Fiction"!

Poets are half-seers who feel the pulse of political and societal evolution beating in their souls. And the political rulers? Will the fall of the Berlin Wall eventually cause a political implosion here as well? Have we indeed evolved into a kind of power state where all kinds of corporations call the shots and where the citizen cannot exercise their rights but receives a "service"? Are there no longer any general rules, but decisions are made on a case-by-case basis? Are laws often made to grant an advantage to select groups or even a single political friend in the name of the common good? Is it a coincidence that you find loopholes in quite a few laws: do these not ensure that those in power rule like enlightened despots? Does the ruling class escape the law through protection by the system? Do various scandals expose the techniques by which the power system allows blackmail on key figures whom it keeps under control in this way? Has Parliament become a superfluous show where the people's elected representatives ask the most absurd questions to get themselves into the news and are forced to stay away from "serious" work under the coercion of blind obedience (with a knife in the back)? Is there an enormous difference between what the citizen experiences in daily life and what is reported in the "free" press? Are journalists little dogs on a short chain, barking only on their master's orders: are they the promoters of politically "correct" thinking? Is this a symptom of what is called a guided democracy (or soft dictatorship)? Does the press serve to distract citizens' attention from something even worse? Our rulers are introducing affirmative action: is this not discrimination in the first place, no matter what adjective you add to it? Do our politicians in developing countries want to play a leading geopolitical role? Or is this perhaps a variant of the Italian lottizazione? Why is there no ban on political accumulation? And what else are they accumulating? Do they never have enough, or do they have no choice in this matter in this kleptocracy? All possible forms of corruption are prohibited by law: what if a single investigating judge were to sink his teeth into this—would it mean the end of the system? One can ask more than one question about the antics that those in power pull with publicly traded companies. And what is the state of citizen privacy? Or are such questions not allowed to be asked here? Is this a "democracy" where everyone's noses must point in the same direction? Are many "democrats" merely wolves in sheep's clothing? Is it still possible to restore this system to an acceptable level of health?

Poets and other artists must seek an answer to these and many more questions, given that almost everyone has been lulled into a "democratic" sedation.

no-go zone - Jan Theuninck, 2016

https://www.nelfuturo.com/Le-no-go-zones-in-Europa

Diplomacy - Jan Theuninck, 2015

the logic of multi-level games

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Art's Role in Soft Diplomacy: The Case of Jan Theuninck's Diplomacy and Themes of War, Social Dynamics, and Visual PoetryArt has long served as a subtle yet potent instrument of soft diplomacy, or soft power—a concept popularized by political scientist Joseph Nye, referring to the ability to influence others through attraction and persuasion rather than coercion. In international relations, visual arts like painting transcend linguistic and cultural barriers, fostering empathy, dialogue, and shared human experiences. Contemporary art, in particular, acts as a bridge across divides, promoting economic growth, cultural exchange, and nuanced discussions on global challenges such as conflict and migration. Governments and institutions increasingly invest in art initiatives—think U.S. State Department's Art in Embassies program or international biennials—to build connections and counter hard power narratives. Paintings, with their layered symbolism and emotional resonance, invite viewers to confront uncomfortable truths, making them ideal for "diplomatic" interventions in public discourse.Enter Belgian artist Jan Theuninck (b. 1954), whose abstract paintings and poetry weave social critique into visual poetry, often interrogating the scars of war, colonial legacies, migration, and power structures. Born in Zonnebeke—a village scarred by World War I trenches—Theuninck's work is deeply rooted in pacifism and historical memory. Blending minimalism and monochrome expressionism, he creates "visual poems" that evoke the chaos of human societies without literal representation. His canvases explore social dynamics—the tensions between elites and masses, inclusion and exclusion, tradition and totalitarianism—while echoing the poetic rhythm of his French-language verses. Themes of war recur as metaphors for ongoing global strife, from the Holocaust to modern neocolonialism and AI-driven surveillance.A prime example is Theuninck's 2015 acrylic-on-canvas painting Diplomacy (70 x 100 cm), an embodiment of art's dual-edged role in soft diplomacy. The work subverts the idealism of diplomatic exchange with a cynical edge, captioned by a twist on Carl von Clausewitz's famous dictum: "Diplomacy is the continuation of war by other means", attributed to Zhou Enlai.
Visually, Diplomacy employs Theuninck's signature abstract style:. It's a visual indictment, forcing viewers to question whether "peace processes" merely repackage aggression.
This piece aligns with Theuninck's broader oeuvre on war and social dynamics. Paintings like Yperite (2004), referencing WWI chemical warfare, or Holocaust (2003), pair abstract fury with poetic elegies to memorialize atrocities and warn of repetition ("and now—more than ever—who is next please?"). In Diplomacy, social dynamics emerge through implied hierarchies: the canvas's asymmetry mirrors unequal power in global forums, critiquing how Western totalitarianism evolves from overt colonialism to subtle economic "aid." As visual poetry, it operates like a haiku—economical, evocative—inviting contemplation on migration's plight or pacifism's fragility, much like Picasso's Guernica did for the Spanish Civil War.In soft diplomacy, works like Diplomacy exemplify art's transformative potential. Exhibited in contexts like the G20 Seoul Summit (via Theuninck's West Meets East, 2010), such pieces facilitate cross-cultural reflection, humanizing abstract geopolitics. They don't resolve wars but seed empathy, challenging viewers to reimagine social bonds amid division. Theuninck's art reminds us: true diplomacy isn't about winning arguments but painting paths to mutual understanding—one stroke at a time.

For peace

we have to fight a war
against terror
against psychological terror
against psychopathical leaders
we have to fight a war
— Jan Theuninck

Diplomacy, we can see the world over that this is no easy feat. I am attacted to the magicianship of this visual poetry… how foreground comes forward and recedes into an abyss how a cloud of grey casts two shadows, the undulation of the land and the intensity of the light and colour.  Not many images can be turned any direction and still satisfy.  (Rebecca Guyver in The Postal Ledger, July 14, 2020)

The progression of recent history clearly shows a dedicated effort to lead the world into unknowingly accepting communitarian solutions.
Communitarianism is the theory that individual rights must be balanced against the rights of the "community." Its many proponents insist that individual rights and liberties pose a real threat to the health and safety of the "community at large." The founders of the Communitarian Network began "shoring up the moral, social and political environment" in the early 1990s. Today the communitarian theory is the basis for hundreds of new global rules and regulations eliminating individual rights.

Self-portrait with heraldic family weapon - Jan Theuninck, 2015

Self-portrait with heraldic family weapon
